The best smelling shop in Kilkenny

It might seem unusual, but the opening line from most customers, coming into my shop is.”I followed my nose, or what’s that lovely smell?
Every day, the answer I give can be different, as it all depends on what I’m making. Sometimes, it’s shampoo bars, so there will be herbaceous notes like rosemary, mint or lavender.
If its’ lipbalm day, there is a yummy chocolatey note from organic cocoa butter which comes all the way from Northern Ghana.  One of my favourite days is making my floral soap, which uses organic rose water, rose geranium and lavender essential oil- this leaves a beautiful, subtle floral fragrance wafting around the workshop for hours.

Customers are very curious about process, and hand crafted products.  They love to see products being made, look at the raw materials, ask questions about how products come together.  Some people are very interested about the origin of ingredients  I love to support female led co -ops in Ghana, and Brazil.  These women are doing amazing work, which is time consuming and very physical.  The end result is beautiful quality butters, rich in colour, and skin loving properties.

The workshop is situated in The Castle Yard, across the road from the majestic Kilkenny Castle, which was built in the 12th Century.  In years gone by, these buildings were the stables for the horses.  In 1963, they were converted to house Kilkenny Design Workshops, to help improve the standard of Irish craft and design.  Now, they are home to independent crafters like potters, silversmiths, goldsmiths, model makers, graphic designers, and me – the natural soap maker.

So if you’re in Kilkenny,  for a day trip or a little break, feel free to pop in, and see how natural skincare products are made from scratch.  I have a little retail space here too, where you can sample or buy products.  Soap and skincare products make a lovely, thoughtful gift for your loved ones, all handcrafted here in the heart of Kilkenny City.
